When I was a camp counselor for a Kids Camp, I got to help with the little preschooler aged kids. One of the activities that we did with them was a nature walk. We walked around the park where the Kids Camp was located and had the children gather different things from nature – leaves, twigs, rocks, grass, flowers, etc. We allowed them to really just look at nature and enjoy being outside. Once they came back with their items, we made little nature people and animals by gluing their leaves, twigs, etc. onto a piece of paper in the design they wanted.
We also did tracings with crayons where we placed a leaf under a piece of paper and colored over the top with a crayon. This helps the kids see the texture and shape of the leaf and is great art to put in their room or on the fridge!
Go take your kids out and enjoy a nature walk! Since I just have a little baby, I tell her the names of different plants and trees and let her feel them. And if you only have older kids, sometimes it’s just nice to talk a walk. Or if you’re like my mom, she loves giving us a tour of her yard.
