Hand me downs and second hand stores are key at this point in our lives – and it is actually super popular right now to refurnish old furniture. When we got married almost 2 years ago, we both didn’t have much when it came to furniture. We had lived in furnished apartments while we went to school and were single, but now we needed our own stuff.
Luckily family came to the rescue as well as good ole Deseret Industries (like a Salvation Army anywhere outside of Utah). We got a couch and chair from my grandma, table, chairs, dresser, and nightstand from DI, stools from Alan’s parents, gifts and giftcards that we bought stuff at Target with, and a bed we found new on KSL.
Most of the stuff we got was in pretty good condition already so we haven’t really fixed them up. We did paint the bar stools brown to match our dark wood furniture. It really is a great feeling when you can fix something up and make it look new or unique.
Now we have our beautiful daughter and still not a lot of money. Some of my friends have received things from friends or siblings that were done having kids, but we didn’t have any of those. So again our families pulled through and Alan and I dedicated our Christmas and both our birthdays to baby stuff as well as having a few baby showers. And this time we bought a rocking chair from DI which we stained and I covered. I was so excited when it was done!
And then today we bought a great jumperoo from KSL that was $40 cheaper than in the store. It was a great find! That’s what I love about KSL, Craigslist, and stores like DI. If you just have patience and keep looking for what you want, eventually you’ll find an amazing deal that will save you lots of money!
One of my greatest desires for when Alan and I are older and our kids are grown is to have extra furniture and what not to give to new and poor couples like ourselves. What a great blessing it is to receive such gifts when you don’t have much. I hope one day we can return the favor.
What have you bought or been given that was second hand that you love?
