I can’t believe my daughter is turning 1 this week! What a quick year it’s been! We’re celebrating with family this weekend and I decided on a winter wonderland theme since the day she was born it snowed and snowed and snowed! So much that we didn’t know if our family would make it to see her in the hospital. And since it hasn’t been snowing much here this winter, we’re bringing the snow anyway!
I wanted my daughter to have a cute wintry whimsical outfit and decided to make a tutu. I didn’t realize how easy this was until I made it! I got some help from Mom Dot and wanted to show you a tutorial as well. And since we’re having another girl, I’m sure I’ll be making many more in the future. 😉
Here’s what you need:
Tulle (choose whichever colors you want! I bought it from a bolt and got 1/2 yard each of 2 colors for size 12 months)
Paper towel roll
Here’s how to make a tutu:
I took one of my daughter’s skirts and measured the waistband. It was 16 inches, so I took off 2 inches (you’ll stretch the elastic back out so take off 2 inches so it won’t be too big) and sewed the elastic into a 14 inch waistband.
Then take your tulle and cut them into strips. You’ll be folding them in half so make sure you double the length you want. For example, I wanted 9 inches in length, so I cut 18 inch long strips by 3 inches wide. I read a suggestion that you can buy 6 inch tulle that isn’t on a bolt which might work better, but this is what I had and it still works great!
After you’ve cut all the strips (a total of about a yard for size 12 months), place the waistband around a roll of paper towels to keep it in place. Then fold the tulle in half, slide it under the waistband, and make a slip knot and pull tight. The closer you put the knots together the fuller the skirt. I did 2 white pieces then 2 purple pieces.
And here’s how it looked once I was finished with the tulle!
You can add any type of embellishment to dress it up or leave it as is. I chose to put a bow on the front with ribbon I had.
And here you have it! My adorable little winter fairy! I was so excited how it came out! I’m excited to show you pictures after this weekend at her birthday party! This makes a great dress up option for older girls also. Obviously you’ll need a lot more tulle and a bigger waistband, but be creative! I know your daughters will love it!
