Tuesdays are very long days for me because Alan has a class after work. So I get the kids all day to myself. Usually by the time he comes home, I feel exhausted, frazzled, and often a little grumpy. We had a meeting to go to last night and no one to babysit because our ward was having an activity and Kami was sick anyway. So we all got home around 9pm and I was super stressed and annoyed with my screaming kids!
So Alan put Kami to bed and came back and said, “She is so cute! I sang her a bed time song and she starting swaying an arm and by the time I was done she was full on dancing!”
I looked at him and said, “Cute, but you know what I really don’t like about this two year old stage? She doesn’t ever listen to me! I call her and she doesn’t come. I tell her to stop and she doesn’t. She was helping me put baby food in the grocery cart and when we had enough I told her we were all done and could stop. Well she kept throwing baby food in the cart! So I’m trying to put them back and she keeps dumping them in and then runs away to some random aisle and I have to go looking for her!”
Well Alan responded, well Kami has always been that way – never really listened. We would call her name as a baby (and she knew her name by then) and just pretend like she didn’t hear you.
But then he said, “But we can’t focus on that, let’s think about the positive things about Kami.” Well that took me by surprise, but very typical of my husband.
So we started talking about all the great qualities that Kami has:
Loves to dance
Gives great hugs
Has always been a good sleeper
And then I thought, oh I wish Chloe was a good sleeper! She still wakes up 2x a night! But then I thought, but she also has great qualities.
She is so happy
Smiles at everyone
So patient – especially with a 2 year old sister
A great eater
Takes great naps
After our little conversation about the positive attributes of our children, I felt so much better! No longer annoyed and frustrated, but satisfied and so in love with my two beautiful girls! And how could you not love these adorable faces?
