This month I got to read A Beginner’s Guide to Talmage. This book is excerpts from James E Talmage’s greatest works:
Articles of Faith
The Great Apostasy
The House of the Lord
Jesus the Christ
The Parables of James E. Talmage
The Story and the Philosophy of Mormonism
The Vitality of Mormonism
And some of his conference talks
I love it because it gives you a taste of his writing without having to read all of them. Some day I want to read some of his books, but at this time in my life, I just don’t have the time. So this is a great way to be familiar with his writings without having to read all of them.
A Beginner’s Guide to Talmage reminds me of True to the Faith where there are topics and they are each defined. In this book it goes through main topics and then says things he has written about each of those topics such as the Plan of Salvation, The Godhead, Jesus Christ, The Atonement, missionary work, scriptures, etc.
I love that the book starts off with his life sketch to help you get to know him better especially since he lived way before my time. He was quite the scholar! And I love hearing about his family life. I just like to know about that kind of thing for some reason. 🙂
It’s also a great resource for talks and lessons because it’s so easy to find information! It’s all labeled for you! And it’s still easy to read because it’s what he has said about the subject rather than just defining it. I found it really interesting!
I definitely think it’s worth getting. So much information packed into one easy read. Perfect for the works of Talmage!
