Our little Clo turned 1 recently! I can’t believe she is 1 already! And she may not look it because she is a teeny one. 🙂
For her first birthday I decided to do an under the sea theme. I found the cutest little romper with a crab on it and decided that’s what I wanted to make as her cake! So I came up with this:
The Cutest Crab Cake!
It was really fun to make and pretty simple. Here’s what you need:
Cake mix (and ingredients to make it)
Homemade frosting recipe (powdered sugar, butter, milk, vanilla)
Cake round or cardboard to place the cake on
Crispy Rice Cereal
Red and black food coloring
2 Dum Dum suckers
First I made the cake. I made 2 8-inch round cakes. After they cooled a bit, I placed one of the cakes on a cardboard cake round. Then I frosted the top of the cake (which becomes the middle), then placed the second cake directly on top. Then I frosted the entire cake with pink frosting. I tried to make it red, but it’s really hard to do with food coloring, so pink it is!
Then make some rice krispies treats. You can find the original recipe HERE from the Kellogg’s website. But here is the recipe for convenience.
1. Melt 3 TBSP of butter or margarine in a large saucepan.
2. Add a bag of mini marshmallows and stir frequently until all are melted.
3. Add food coloring to your desired shade of pink (I tried to have it match the frosting).
4. Add 6 cups of crispy rice cereal and stir until blended.
At this point, I poured the rice krispies onto parchment paper. Let them cool a little so you can work with them, but not all the way where they will get too hard to work with.
I made 2 claws and 4 legs by shaping and reshaping the rice krispies treats until I got the shapes I wanted. You can use my picture to get an idea of how they looked. I also placed some rice krispies around two Dum Dum sucker sticks for the eyes.
After they cooled and hardened, I gently pushed the edge of each leg and claw into the sides of the cake. Then I wrote Clo’s name with black frosting and put black frosting eyes on the Dum Dums. Then I placed the Dum Dums in the cake and added a big frosting smile!
And there you have a super cute crab cake! And the great thing about it is that we had cake and rice krispies treats to eat which is especially a hit among the kids or people who don’t like cake.
And most importantly, Clo loved it! Happy Birthday Girl!
