Alan’s brother David and his sister Annie are both serving missions right now for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons). It used to be that men had to be 19 and women 21 to serve missions, but last October the age was lowered to 18 for men (after graduating high school) and 19 for women. This increase in age has increased the number of missionaries dramatically! We have almost 75,000 missionaries all over the world! It is an obligation for men to go, but still optional for women even though many more are going now. When I was 21 I didn’t feel like I needed to serve a mission and I actually met Alan and married him by the time I would have gotten home if I would have served. 🙂
This is Annie or Sister Tanner now (on the left). She is currently serving in the Perth Australia mission.
And this is David or Elder Tanner now. And he is serving in the Oklahoma City, Oklahoma mission. My husband served his mission in Tulsa, Oklahoma so it was so exciting that he is serving in the same state!
If you would like to hear more about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and talk to missionaries like my brother-in-law and sister-in-law, just head to Mormon.org. They would love to talk to you!
Missionaries are separated from their home for 18 months (for women) to 24 months (for men). We are allowed to email each other every week and they can call home/skype for Mother’s Day and Christmas. So sometimes missionaries can get a little homesick. Also, many missionaries are heading to places they have never been or maybe never even heard of! The cultures and experiences are different everywhere, even in the United States!
So Deseret Book Company has just launched a new website called MissionHome.com. Mission Home is a place where missionaries can learn about their individual missions before they go such as local customs, food, transportation, safety, and many other insights. It also has great sources and information for missionaries when they return as well.
And for all those who have children, siblings, and friends on missions, they have care packages that will be sent directly from Deseret Book! They have pre-made packages or you can make your own. So if you know someone leaving on a mission or already there, make sure to check it out!
