Having white teeth can help you feel more confident about your smile and yourself. There are a number of ways to whiten your teeth. The most expensive way is to go to the dentist and have them do it, but many of us can’t afford the expensive procedure.
So I’m going to share with you 3 ways to do it at home!
First let me share with you how teeth whitening works.
When you whiten your teeth, you’re actually removing the stains that have built up over a period of time. Most teeth whiteners use either carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide to create an oxidation reaction to break down the stains on your teeth. Because of this, not everyone’s teeth are going to have the same result and same shade of white from teeth whitening. It depends on your oral care, your natural tooth color, and your genetics.
1. Baking Soda and Lemon Juice
Mix several teaspoons of baking soda with lemon juice to make a paste. Put a good amount of paste on your toothbrush and apply to your teeth. Allow to sit for 1 minute and then rinse with water so the acid doesn’t begin to eat away at your tooth enamel.
2. Whitening Strips
When I was in high school I used whitening strips. I haven’t used them in almost 10 years so I thought I would try them again. I just bought the store brand with strips you use for 14 days. These teeth whiteners usually only make your teeth 1 to 2 shades whiter. Here are my before and after pictures. So a little better, but nothing dramatic.
3. Smile Brilliant
If you want a dentist-like white smile without having to spend the big bucks for the treatment, Smile Brilliant teeth whitening trays are going to be the best option for you! The kit is pretty awesome. I let my husband do it because his teeth are yellower than mine. But now I’m wishing I would have done it! 🙂
First you take a mold of your teeth and send it in to the Smile Brilliant lab.
Then they send back your personalized trays that exactly fit your teeth which results in more accurate teeth whitening and less likely to make your gums sensitive like the strips might do. Just like you would do at the dentist! And they come in a cool little case!
Then you apply the gels. There are actually two separate gels you use. One to prep your teeth for 20-30 minutes and then the second to whiten. You can keep the whitening on for 60 to 180 minutes. This needs to be done 4 to 7 times to see results.
Alan did the trays 7 times over the course of 3-4 weeks and kept the trays on for about an hour each time. Here are his before and after pictures. He has more naturally yellow teeth so I don’t think they wouldn’t ever be super white, but this is definitely an improvement! And I don’t know if the pictures totally do it justice. In person I definitely notice a difference. I think his teeth look great!
Keeping those white teeth white!
Once you’ve done your teeth whitening trays, the best way to keep your results are to brush twice a day and floss once a day. It’s also good to avoid the following foods and drinks:
Black teas and coffee
White and red wine
Carbonated beverages (dark and light-colored sodas)
Berries and other strongly-colored foods
Sauces (like soy, tomato, curries)
