I love when spring comes and the weather warms up. When the grass turns soft and green and the leaves grow back on the trees. My favorite part about spring is that my kids can finally go outside and play! My kids love being outside and it’s hard to keep them in all winter. These Wisconsin winters can be brutal! But there are so many great spring outdoor activities to do with your kids to help them play all day.
Spring Outdoor Activities for Play All Day
My kids love to ride their bikes. Even during the winter my kids are asking me to ride their bikes. They haven’t learned that just because the sun is shining doesn’t mean it’s warm outside. 🙂 You can let them ride on your driveway or go on a family bike ride. Be sure to make sure your kids always wear a helmet!
There’s something magical about blowing bubbles. It’s so fun to see them float and pop! I especially love when my 1 year old sees them and his face lights up! Plus, they’re really cheap which is good because my kids seem to dump them out most of the time. You can also make your own bubbles like these giant ones!
My kids love to draw so taking it outside is even better. They love to spend time doing art and it’s something they can all do together. You can also make a hopscotch area for them to jump through or have your kids practice writing their names.
We are lucky enough to have a park right across the street from our house. This is one of my favorite ways to play in the spring because my kids get to let out lots of energy. And my 6 year old just learned how to push herself on the swings which frees up a hand for me! There’s so much to climb, slide, and swing on that they have fun for hours at a time. You can even pack a picnic and enjoy lunch in between play time. Invite another mommy friend to have some girl time too.
I love the Carter’s skirts that have built in shorts underneath especially for these park days. They’re perfect for my girls who love to wear skirts, but also love to play. I also bought them little spandex shorts to wear under their dresses too so they can play to their heart’s content.
Kids can get really creative with these. They can find sticks and rocks outside to create a cute little area for fairies or they have fun little fairy kits if you want to go all out. My daughter recently found a rock and colored it with markers to make a rainbow. She was so proud of her creation! It would be the perfect addition to a fairy garden.
Hula Hoops and Jump Ropes
These are great spring outdoor activities for a little bit older kids. My kids want to hula hoop and jump rope, but just aren’t quite coordinated for that yet. You can have little competitions to see who can hula hoop the longest or who can jumprope the longest without misstepping.
If you have a nature preserve near your home or a place where your kids can get into nature, have them look for critters, flowers, or birds. You can create a little scavenger hunt or just see what they point out. We found a caterpillar the other day and my kids love holding them and watching them crawl around. Or frogs are really fun to catch and hold. And I love to see the different kinds of butterflies.
Plant a Vegetable Garden or Herb Garden
Spring is a great time to help children be able to see how things grow and where our food comes from. If it’s too early to start planting seeds outside, you can start them inside or do an indoor herb garden. I’ve done this before with my kids and they love looking to see how much the plants have grown each morning. Especially when those first little sprouts come up. Then you can show them how to use the herbs in your meals. They will especially love when they can see the vegetables you’ve grown in their meals. And they taste amazing!
This can be something fun you do after a nature walk. Have your kids collect different things from outside like twigs, leaves, and grasses. On a paper plate, have them glue down their twigs, leaves, and grasses to make animals or shapes. This is a great way for them to use their imaginations and it’s a fun way to see what they come up with.
Run and Roll on Grassy Hills
Do you remember as a kid rolling down hills? I loved that! And my kids love to just run and run. By the park near our house, there’s a great little hill where they just take off and see how fast they can run down hill. It’s also a great sledding hill, but getting excited for winter is a whole other post.
The Right Clothes for Play All Day
My kids are also really hard on their clothes so when they play it’s important to have clothes that last and are functional, but are also cute. Because who doesn’t want cute clothes? That’s why I love Carter’s clothes from Kohl’s! They have great options and are perfect for playing all day! My girls can be a little picky about their clothes and when I took them to the Carter’s section at Kohl’s, they loved looking through everything and picking out what they wanted.
One of my favorite features on the boys shorts is a working draw string. For some reason my boys have exceptionally small wastes compared to the average boy. So when I put their shorts on, they slip right off! But the drawstring allows me to pull the shorts tight so they don’t come off. We love Carter’s clothes! So cute, affordable, and functional. And I’ve been a huge fans of Kohl’s for years. I love their discounts and Kohl’s cash. And you know I’m MVP Kohl’s Charge member! So many great deals!
And from March 17 through April 2, Kohl’s is having a sale on Carter’s clothing where you get $10 off a $40 purchase with promo code KIDSALE10! So get shopping for those great kid’s clothes to get your kids ready for spring outdoor activities.
